Carotid CT Angiogram

A carotid artery CT angiogram is performed to evaluate the carotid arteries.  The carotid arteries extend from the aorta near the heart and supply the brain with blood.  The purpose of a carotid CT angiogram is to evaluate if there is disease in the carotid arteries, which is usually created by atherosclerosis.  If the carotid arteries become narrowed or blocked, there will be insufficient blood supply to the brain, and a stroke may occur.  If disease is present, you may be a candidate for an interventional procedure (carotid stent) or surgery before an adverse outcome occurs.
